Summer Savings Series:
Shopping at Thrift Stores
Creating a home that inspires you, delights you and one that you are proud of doesn't have to cost a lot. But sometimes it takes more than shopping the house and using what you already have - sometimes you need to shop for the items in need.
Curating your home decor at thrift stores is one of my FAVORITE ways to personalize your home in a way that shopping at big box stores (even on the cheap), just can't accomplish.
You may LOVE thrift store shopping or HATE it. Or, you may be fascinated by the idea but feel like you never find anything GOOD, but somehow everyone else does. And you may wonder why everyone else has the best thrift stores, when in fact, it's likely NOT the thrift store, but the strategy you use to shop them.
In today's episode I'm sharing my top 7 tips for shopping at thrift stores SUCCESSFULLY - so you can walk away with enviable hauls more than you walk away with duds.
This is the first part of the summer savings series where we will be diving into different ways you can save money AND have a home that you can't stop gushing about. If you are not subscribed to the show, be sure to do that so you don't miss all the tips coming your way this summer!

Three of the most common things I hear from you:
* "I have kids so I can't have nice things."
* "I don't have any money to make changes."
* "I don't know where to start."
Today is the last Quick Tip Tuesday I'll be releasing until the beginning of August, but like all good teachers, I'm leaving you with some homework - something for you to think about over the next eight weeks. Maybe you'll plug in one of these episodes each week until my Quick Tip Tuesdays return.
In today's episode I'm sharing I'm sharing the three most common excuses I get for why people don't take action on creating homes that feel like a respite, inspiring, functional and beautiful.
1. I have kids, so I can't have nice things. B.S. You can have nice things. Either you choose to believe that nice things come with a hefty price tag or you have limited boundaries to keep those nice things nice.
2. I have no money. If I had a dollar for every time I heard this, I would be living large in a lakeside mansion eating bonbons for breakfast. It's true, you may not have a pile of cash lying around just waiting to be thrown into the proverbial fire, but there are SO many changes you can make without spending any money at all or less money than your last trip to Target where you promised you'd only be picking up toothpaste.
TUNE IN EVERY FRIDAY through July for my Summer Savings Series where I give you practical tips for shopping on less, doing DIY more and strategies for saving big.
3. I don't know where to start. Starting can be overwhelming, frustrating, confusing, debilitating. I get it. Here are three FREE ways to start this summer while the kids are splashing in the pool while you're sipping your iced tea:
A. Listen to the podcast
B. Read the blog
C. Join the Facebook Group
Specific episodes that teach you where to start:

Do you wish you could have someone just come in and wave a magic wand to show you your home's potential?
It'd be nice, right?
To have someone come in and show you which colors they'd choose for the walls, what area rug they'd recommend for the living room - along with the chairs, the couch, the side tables, the lamps, the artwork...ALL the details.
Oh, and it wouldn't it be nice to know that they were all the right measurements for your space, the right lengths, the right depth, the right width, the right scale.
Don't forget making sure all the little details are taken care of, like the specific design elements that make your home cohesive: wood finishes, metal finishes, basket weaves, textures, colors...
ALL OF IT is inside a Custom Design Board
(you'll hear me refer to it as a Custom Mood board...same thing).
Oh...and don't forget...you don't have to leave your home at all during the process. The design interview happens virtually, the design board is delivered to you (with the rationale) virtually and you can shop...yup...virtually all from the Custom Design Board.
In today's episode I'm sharing a sneak peak at a design rationale for my client Jen, who purchased two custom design boards for her living room and two for her dining room. You'll hear me explain my inspiration piece, the direction of the design and the reason behind the recommendation for swapping out stainless steel handles on her kitchen cabinets.

If you had 60 minutes to ask a home decorator ANY question about your home...what would you ask?
You can cover A LOT of ground in a 60 minute conversation: area rugs, front door color, entryway benches, reupholstering said bench, correct furniture for the space, chair selections for a desk, how to style a landing area, opinions about whether to buy two Anthropolgie-like mirrors, whether to keep a marble top table, ideas for furniture layout, the possibility of bringing in color into your home design...(and more).
Those were just SOME of the discussion points I had with Alissa during our Decorating SOS call where her main objective was to make decisions on her entryway and her living room.
Imagine what YOU could cover in an hour during your Decorating SOS call. You don't have to have any of the answers before booking one.
All you need is:
* a desire to make change in your home
* to know which room you'd like to focus our conversation around
* an hour of time via Zoom

The DESIGN VAULT is open until May 31st!!!!
Home design is never one size fits all and shouldn't be. Because home design is specific to the person and their home and includes several factors like: home, budget, timeline, design style, personality, color preferences, etc. each home owner looking for help within their home might need or want something different than the last guy.
Enter: The ROOM EDIT
The Room Edit is basically like a (sweet) bossy big sister who finally has permission to give you all her best advice for what she would do to your home if it were her home. She'll share all her suggestions from paint color to furniture layout and do it in a way that empowers you to make the final choices. "I think you should paint it a creamy white." What white? She didn't say, so you get to choose.
You may love a ROOM EDIT because YOU LOVE doing projects yourself and would prefer to be the decision maker, you just want a little direction so you know where to start and which path to take. You'll handle it from there.
In today's episode I'm sharing the ROOM EDIT I did with sister clients Melissa and Rebecca. They wanted to do a makeover for their parents while they were away for the weekend. You'll hear me give my overall suggestions for the direction I see the room taking in order to transform it from a 1990s outdated beige home into a cozy, cohesive lakeside retreat.
You'll hear suggestions like:
* paint the walls a creamy white
* add bamboo shades and curtains
* remove the pillows
* use this color palette
* the goal is to bring the outdoors in
* get a bigger rug with a lighter foundation
* remove the chickens!!!
With NO specific product names or colors given, the information was more than enough to transform this space into one fit for a lakeside home.

252 // Design Files: Three women, three homes, three amazing results
Friday May 24, 2024
Friday May 24, 2024
SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE. SALE.
Are you an ACTION taker or an inspiration hoarder, pinning beautiful home decor pictures on Pinterest like it's your job? In today's episode, I'm sharing how three different women, with three different budgets, learning styles, and aspirations for their homes took a different pathway to achieving the goals they wanted for their homes.
Although each of these ladies had different design styles, they all ultimately had the same goal: they wanted their homes to look better tomorrow than they did today!
Inside this episode you'll hear how Colleen chose 1:1 decorating coaching calls (lovingly referred to as Decorating SOS calls) where she slowly chipped away at turning her inspiration into results she loves.
Then you'll meet Sarah, one of the hardest workers I know. Sarah knew she wanted change, was willing (and able) to do the work herself, she just didn't know where to start. So we started with a plan - a Room Edit, where my designer's eye evaluated her space and compared it to the inspiration photo she had and then I gave her a generalized plan that she put into action.
And finally, you'll meet a busy, corporate mom of four, Kara, who had a great starting foundation in her dining room, but wanted help elevating the space but didn't want to spend the time picking out the products herself. So I created a Custom Design Board (aka Mood Board) for her to see all of the product choices I selected from the stores she likes shopping at. Seeing these products together allowed her to see how they interacted with each other before she purchased a thing. She was able to save time and, although I shopped for her, saved money because she knew what the products looked like together before she purchased a thing.
For ONE WEEK ONLY...these three design services are available for booking before heading back into the vault for another year. Though you don't have to receive the service this week, you do have to book it this week by May 31st.

So, you want your home to look like a designer was just there...
Last week, in episode #249, I was answering a listener's question who wanted to know 'how to get the professional look' inside your home.
Last week I shared 4 foundational ways you can create the look in your home that a designer was there doing the work. These four things are the base for starting - things like creating a cohesive look, paying attention to scale, applying the rule 'less is more.' You can listen to that episode here!
This week, I'm going a bit deeper as I share five things to do while you are styling your home to add the proverbial icing on the cake. Styling is the finishing touches and the finishing touches are in the details. We explore how to create a full, nuanced, intentional look floor to ceiling.
After listening to this episode, if you are wanting help creating a home that looks like a designer was just there doing it for you, come join Home Design 101. Inside Home Design 101, you will learn decorating concepts that will help make your home look cohesive and feel cozy. Cleaning: do you love it OR do you hate it?
It's no surprise when you visit Pinterest, Instagram or the interwebs that there are a multitude of cleaning systems that are promoted as THE BEST with promises of having the cleanest house you've ever had in the history of ever.
But here's the thing...
Unless you LOVE cleaning, I think it can be hard to get into the routine of cleaning in a sustainable, consistent way. It doesn't matter how MUCH you love a clean house, so much as it matters how your personality coincides with a routine that works for you!
So in this episode, I'm sharing the system that I found that FINALLY works with my personality that allows me to have continually clean house without feeling overwhelmed. But although I'm sharing it with you, I'm not assuming that we are one and the same.
In this episode I'm sharing with you the QUESTIONS you should ask yourself so you know how to develop a cleaning routine that works for you, the demands of your home and WITH your personality.
This show is a replay...enjoy!

249 // The secret to decorating your home like a professional
Tuesday May 14, 2024
Tuesday May 14, 2024
How do you decorate your home to make
it look like a professional did it?
This is the question asked by one of our listeners - how do you get professional looking results when decorating your home? This is a two part series (subscribe to listen to part 2 on Tuesday, May 21st).
Keep these four decorating principles in mind while decorating your home:
1. Less is more. This doesn't always mean you need to declutter, though that's a good first step. Less can mean, fewer items, fewer matching sets, a less stuffed couch, less of the footprint taken up by furniture in general.
2. Scale matters. Paying attention to size guidelines is critical for getting a room to look just right. A too small area rug or too short of curtains can instantaneously spoil good design.
3. Repetition is key. Repetition of design elements is how one creates a cohesive looking home. Repetition in the large details is important, but when that repetition carries to the small details...that's where it starts looking 'professional.'
4. Practice, experiment, change things often. This is your permission to play. If you only intake ideas and never practice them, you'll be left wondering what a professionally designed home looks like.
Part two of how to make your home look like a professional was there, will be airing next week. Subscribe to listen.

Did you know?
The outside of your home is a reflection of the inside. Those scruffy looking plants, that unkept lawn and all the stuff on your front porch...those are telling a story about your home.
Creating a home that you love coming home to doesn't just start once you open the front door, it starts when you turn into your driveway (or if we're feeling really philosophical - it starts in your mind and in your heart...we'll save that for another day).
When people talk about curb appeal, of course it's an impression for others - often times the first impression, but it SHOULD be done for you!
In this episode, I'm sharing four quick tips for boosting your curb appeal this weekend - and it goes beyond mowing the lawn and trimming the hedges. The yard and those scraggly bushes are important to take care of, but so is your front porch or your landing area.
